They say I have my father's features, But I longed to see those features in his own eyes… Not in faded photographs, nor in tales of his heroism that end in tears… I am Raef Raef Omar—named after my father, and also after my martyred grandfather— And all I've known of family gatherings is loss… And all I've known of safety is my mother's embrace… But I still believe their spirits surround me, Soothing my heart whenever longing intensifies.
